Steinbeck eloquently captivates the hearts of those of us who love the idea of traveling, but also captures the reality of the nervous tension, which surrounds journeying into the unknown. Travels with Charley is a nonfiction work that documents Steinbeck’s across America with his beloved and spunky French poodle, Charley. So, I decided to give Travels with Charley a go. Steinbeck has a writing style that is simultaneously simple and complex, something that makes reading his literature very enjoyable. I’ve only ever read one book by John Steinbeck: Of Mice and Men, and I loved it. As I browsed through the shelves, I stumbled across a smaller little book that immediately grabbed my attention: John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley. I wanted something different and fun, and since I had a gift card to spend, it felt like the perfect excuse to find some new reading material without spending my own money. You know the kind of “good” that just makes you feel better? Not necessarily humor, just something to make me smile and to make the day a little brighter. The other day I went to the bookstore in search of a good book.
